On the weekend of July 23-25, the SCA 97 Girls, coached by Chris Ziemer, travelled to San Diego, to compete with the very best teams in the nation at the 31st annual Surf Cup. Out of a strong field of 16 teams, the 97 girls had an impressive showing and advanced undefeated to the quarterfinals. In group qualifying games, they defeated Socal State Cup semifinalists, Slammers 1-0 with a goal by Monica Furne. They tied San Diego Surf White 1-1 (Shelby Evenich scored on a penalty kick) and then tied Washington State finalists Eastside FC 0-0 to advance. Their only loss was to So Cal Blues Dodge, ranked #8 nationally.Coach Ziemer was impressed with his team this weekend, "Competing at Surf Cup is always exciting because it provides the chance to compete at an amazing facility as well as against the top teams in the US.”

Throughout the weekend, scouts from the US National Team had a chance to see all of the U15 teams in action. The team has been to Surf Cup several times before, but failed to advance out of the group, so that was our initial goal. We opened the tournament with a key 1-0 win over Slammers, which is regarded as one of the top clubs in the US. In the following game, we took on host San Diego Surf and trailed at the half, but the girls responded to earn a crucial tie. In our final group game we played a very capable Eastside FC team from Washington, and with them needing to win to advance and a tie or a win meaning we would move on, they put us under a tremendous amount of pressure from the start. Our girls defended well to earn a 0-0 tie which meant we advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time. In the quarterfinals, we played against Socal Blues, another of the the top clubs in the US. We were still a bit tired from the morning game against Eastside and fell behind 0-1. We came out strong in the second half, but they scored against the run of play to go ahead 2-0. At that point, we pushed numbers forward to try to get back in the game and they eventually beat us 3-0. It was a great weekend for us, and not only did we get 3 great games, but we showed we could compete with the top teams in our age group." Congratulations to Coach Chris and to the girls!

In the Championship game SCA was trailing 3-1 at half, but Symone Groll-Nevel put two more in the back of the net with assists by Eden Brooker. Then with about a minute left in the game, a handball in the box gave way for the surefire shot of Eden who put in the game winning goal! Goalie, Alice Gacegu, had a fantastic weekend with numerous saves that helped them go undefeated at the Zephyr Cup. The 98GN team was a scoring machine with 18 goals scored this weekend with an 8-0 win over Sierra Mountain Truckee (Alycia Garcia-1, Lulu Duplicki-2, Hannah Holden-2, Symone Groll-Nevel-3), 3-1 win over Santa Rosa United Frost (Symone-2, Eden Brooker-1) and 3-2 win over Santa Rosa United Fury (Symone- 2, Miranda Miles-1). They couldn’t have done it without the strong defense of Alycia Garcia, Lia Diaz, Ashley Dannenbring, Sarah Craig and Lulu Duplicki, the control of midfielders Haley Barker and Clara Constantini, and tenacity of forwards Emma Pierson, Hannah Holden and Miranda Miles. Great job 98 Girls North!

The SCA North 00 Girls, coached by Trevor White took 2nd place at Boofest in Sacramento the weekend of October 23rd and 24th. They defeated Sacramento United 3-1, Dublin 3-0, and tied Pleasanton 1-1 which qualified them for the finals. Their only loss of the weekend was to Woodland, played in torrential rains. Congratulations to the girls and to coach Trevor for a great weekend. For more details, read on...

The weekend began with the SCA North U11 Girls donning their green Team Toxic shirts, spray-painting their hair bright green and covering themselves with scary tattoos and applying black stripes under their eyes.

Despite all the enthusiasm, they stepped onto the field and came out a bit flat against Sacramento United. A Coach Trevor half-time pep talk resulted in a great second half comeback that included stellar goalie play from Kaitlin and goals from Alex, Sienna and Sierra to secure a 3-1 victory.

Next up was Dublin Magic, who have won several other events this year and have some big, fast players. SCA’s defense, anchored by Julie, Emily and Gillian shut the Magic down, time and time again while Ava took matters into her own feet and scored two goals with Sienna chipping in another for good measure and a 3-0 win.

Based on points and the play of the other teams in their bracket, SCA was already through to the finals. But there was more work to do, as the clouds began to gather, early Sunday morning. The team arrived in near darkness at the fields to blustery winds that had blown down the goals during the night. The Pleasanton Rage had their own ideas about trying to reach the finals and they played hard the entire game. Daisy controlled the midfield for SCA and helped them go up in the first half on another goal by Sienna. Pleasanton had the wind in the second half though and managed to tie up the game to secure a 1-1 tie.

By the time the girls got back to the hotel to rest up before the final, the rain had shifted into a full scale storm that actually drew a high winds advisory from the National Weather Service. The tournament even made the decision to cancel most of the consolation matches. But the Finals would go on. In SCA’s favor was that the team was playing on turf, but as the girls began trying to warm up, it became apparent that even the turf field could not manage the torrential downpour, as pools of water covered various parts of the field.

Showing character beyond their years, the girls embraced the tricky conditions and pledged to give it their all. Woodland Arsenal was deservedly in the final, winning each of their games and not allowing any goals. The trend continued as Arsenal was able to somehow score two goals despite an outstanding keeper performance from Brianna in a game that was more sloshball than soccer.

As the girls drove home, huddled in blankets and with heaters in the cars cranked, they had the satisfaction that they gave great effort, had played well, and may never again play in weather conditions such as this.

The SCA 99 Boys won the Norcal State Cup Gold 2 Division tournament on Sunday, February 13th in Woodland, CA. In the final, SCA defeated Mustang Lokomotiv from Danville 5-4 with the final score coming on a "golden" goal in extra time. It was a dramatic, nail-biting game until the very end and an exciting conclusion to a great season. Congratulations to Coach Neil Turnbull and the boys! Here is the link for all 5 SCA Goals!!

Read on for more details...

With both teams playing similar styles and formations, Mustang scored first early in the first half, only to be immediately matched by a beautiful bending corner kick by SCA’s Dino Santia, score 1-1. SCA took the lead in the first half with a blast from Steve Proctor from well beyond the 18-yard box to go up 2-1. The composed Mustang squad was able to answer back and leveled the contest at 2-2 going into halftime.

SCA’s Dominic Cristobal opened the second half scoring with a laser, left-footed strike high into the goal to go up 3-1. The very disciplined and determined opponent scored the next two goals to take the lead, 4-3. With less than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time SCA goalkeeper, Brady Scott came well off his line to clear a tricky ball down the field and found Proctor again on the receiving end who slammed the ball into the back of the net and tied the game 4-4.

With the State Cup trophy on the line, the match headed to extra time with emotion and intensity at a peak level. The golden goal format was in play and it looked like Mustang would win only to have a break away attempt hit the crossbar and the ensuing rebound shot saved by the fingertips of SCA goalie, Scott. Score still 4-4.

During the second 5 minutes extra period both teams traded strong attempts on goal but with less than 30 seconds remaining an SCA cross was received by Cristobal who was able to sneak it by the keeper for the match winner.

Coach Neil Turnbull commented on the victory, "The character that the boys showed after going down 3-4 was impressive: they could have easily put their heads down and packed it in. The work ethic they displayed during the season all came together in the end. I couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishment."

Members of the championship team include: Raleigh Berry, Michael Buzard, Nicolas Carle, Dominic Cristobal, Thomas de Jong, Sumeet Dulai, Angel Gutierrez, David Luis, Jared Miller, Jeffrey Mondragon-Vivas, Jackson O"Neil, Steve Proctor, Grant Sandwina, Dino Santia, Noah Schneider, Brady Scott and Ethan Waters.
