Friday, 27 June 2008
97_girls_2008_regionalsOn June 24th, the SCA 97 Girls, coached by Trisha Ziemer, came home champions of the US Club Soccer Regional Tournament in Modesto. The girls had a perfect 4-0-0 record with a goal differential of 10 goals for and 3 against, defeating teams from San Juan, San Ramon, Elk Grove, and finally, Santa Rosa United in the finals.
On Saturday, SCA's first game was against the San Juan Spirits. The scoring started when Amanda Galbraith from the center circle headed a pass forward to Cami Rencken who then broke away from the defenders and placed a top shelf kick from about 15 yards out. In the second half Taylor Ziemer sent a left footed cross into the box in which was redirected just inside the post by Amanda. Final score: SCA 2, San Juan 1.  On Sunday SCA faced Bellazurre from San Ramon. Cami Rencken started the scoring after receiving a through pass from Danielle Nunn. San Ramon led at the half 2-1 but in the second half SCA dominated. Cami would again find the back of the net from a long pass from Gabbi Lemos. With six minutes remaining to play Jillian Van Riper had a shot from about 18 yards out that deflected off the goalie to give SCA a well-earned victory of 3-2.  On Monday the team played Storm of Elk Grove. A defensive first half ended with the score 0-0. The girls came out strong in the second half not giving up any shots on our goal and collecting 2 goals for themselves.  The first goal was on a cross by Cami into the box to Amanda who deflected it in with her knee. The second goal came from the same pair with Amanda playing a through ball to Cami who again found the back of the net.  The championship game was against local rivals Santa Rosa United. This game had intense pressure from both sides but SCA scored first. Gabbi Lemos was awarded a free kick from about 22 yards out and she placed it just off the goalies fingertips for a 1-0 halftime lead. The second half SCA kept the pressure on when Danielle Nunn slid a pass to Taylor who made a one touch shot to make it 2-0. We knew the championship was cinched when Sierra Overton connected with Cami on a breakaway down the sideline to put the game away with a final score of SCA 3 SRU 0.  Fantastic all around play also came from Delaney Frye (goalie), Liza Bernard, Lizzie Woerner, Nikki Elliott(goalie), Rebecca Dodelle, Shelby Evenich, Olivia Musil and Grace Forsell.  Congratulations to the SCA 97 Girls for bringing home the Gold!
