Welcome to SCA Younger Teams
Friday, 25 April 2008
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Sonoma County Alliance for the 2008-2009 season. All of us at SCA are very excited about the upcoming season. The coaches and I feel this is the most talented group of players we have ever had in SCA.  Each of our teams is stronger and our objective is to help develop every player to their fullest potential. The SCA Coaching Staff is also stronger.  I am proud to say that  SCA continues to have the best soccer educators in the area.

The combination of great educators and highly talented and motivated players has the making for another great season.SCA prides itself on being ambitious and progressive and added several NEW facets to our existing programs.

A few of these programs are:

  • Formed the SCA North Program in cooperation with Windsor Youth Soccer League for ages U9 –U14 and formed 3 teams this year in Windsor.
  • Combined SCA U8-U10 Academy with Petaluma United U10 to form the NEW SCA Player Development  Academy for all for U8-10
  • We developed a better cooperation with Petaluma United.  SCA will have only one team and United will become more like a 2nd team for SCA.  This will create 2 strong teams that play at different levels and allow for easy player movement
  • Added SCA Junior Academy for 4-6 year old in cooperation with Renee Ziemer of Kinder Kickz

What is new up North?

The SCA North is based in Northern Sonoma County (Windsor). These teams are formed and will be operated exactly like the SCA teams based in Petaluma. Our main goal is to provide as many interested soccer enthusiasts in ages U9-14 to be part of our SCA Program and a chance to play regardless of where they live.

In the U15-19 age groups we plan to pool the most talented players from SCA and SCA North to form the highest motivated and talented teams possible based in Petaluma. Assistant Director Andrew Ziemer and other SCA staff are assisting with the training programs of Windsor Youth Soccer League (Class 4), Windsor United  (Class 3), Petaluma Youth Soccer League (Class 4) and Petaluma United (Class 3).This model is similar to youth clubs worldwide and gives us a chance to develop the SCA players from the youngest ages and not rely on recruiting.  This structure is the strength for the future stability of the SCA program.

It is never too early!

Our SCA Junior Academy is the perfect introduction to the beautiful game of soccer. The SCA Junior Academy will help your child build a great athletic foundation, teach them the importance of teamwork and individual improvement in a non-competitive atmosphere.  What a great way to keep the SCA siblings busy and make them a part of the SCA family.

Expectations

Most of the SCA teams have jumped right into the Nor Cal Spring League or have upcoming Jamborees. I would like to remind you, that during the spring phase, I ask the SCA staff to focus on developing players by playing them in several positions. This time is also used to evaluate each our teams and players weaknesses and strengths.

We always want the players to give 100% and try to win every game, but I ask the coaches to not coach solely to win at the expense of player movement or players development. There will be times I ask the coaches to coach more to win. This is usually at US Club Regionals, Nor Cal Cup, State Cup and big tournaments semifinals and finals. So, please be sure to keep this in mind when you watch the games, talk to other parents and most importantly when you talk with your player.

Everyone in SCA including my staff and I, take great pride in our professional behavior. We also take pride in the behavior of our players and parents in the games and on the sidelines. Please remember that we would like the coaching and instruction to come from the coach. There are a lot of learning moments in soccer and if we “joystick” our players all the time they will never be able to make decisions on their own. Of course, I expect the coaches to be giving instruction, but let them do it when they feel it is necessary and lets not have it come from the sidelines and parents.

Hey REF!

We also want to make sure everyone treats our opponents and referees well. I can promise you that there will be more than one time this year you feel cheated or wronged by a call. This happens all over the world at the highest level. So, please realize the referees are also not perfect and are trying their best and having people scream at them will only make it worse.

“ONE CLUB”

In closing I wanted to thank everyone for all the time they put into their players and SCA. SCA is a unique soccer club. In many ways a true club unlike many others. Many clubs in the US do not have the same culture and “ONE CLUB” philosophy. In SCA our players, coaches, parents and teams all work together. We train together, support each other and are growing together. I am very proud to be part of such a great club. We have a lot of events, tournaments and fundraisers that are coming up and I know this great culture will shine again with volunteers continuing to step up and make SCA the best REAL club around.

I look forward to seeing you on the field.

Yours in SCA Soccer,
Josh Sterling
