Our Club

Sonoma County Alliance (SCA) was founded in 2001 for the U15 – U19 age groups. SCA is rapidly developing into one of the top soccer clubs in Northern California. Since it’s beginning in 2001, SCA team’s have had successes in local, state, regional and national competitions and the club has been very successful at placing its older players into college programs. Our Philosophy

SCA teams play a common system: 1-3-4-3 or 1-4-3-3. Our style of play is based on attacking soccer, wing play, and using our goal keeper as a sweeper. We focus on good ball circulation (possession) in order to create chances and press to win the ball back when we do not have it.  Our focus on developing a young player’s mastery of the ball and mastery of 1v1 situations will allow your player to continue to be successful through the older age groups. This belief in educating the younger age groups in mastery of the ball and 1v1 duals frees our coaches from the pressure of winning. Although winning remains a goal, our long term view places individual development before winning until the older ages where winning becomes an important part of the developmental process.

Our Staff

SCA has some of the finest soccer educators in Northern California. Our staff holds 6 USSF National "A",  4USSF National "B", 3 USSF National "C", 3Dutch Trainer II (5 month course in Holland) and one German National "B" license. The staff also has over 20 years of combined coaching experience at the District, State and Regional levels of ODP. The staff has 3 coaches who are with the US Club Soccer ID2 program. In addition our staff has 7 coaches who have coached at the college level at 7 different colleges.

Our staff’s commitment to being open to learning, improving constantly, working together and placing player development as our primary goal benefits our players immensely. These shared qualities and goals insure your child is trained with the most current training ideas and drills by our staff who embraces a positive coaching philosophy. Finally, the cooperation between our staff is unmatched benefiting your child’s soccer development immensely.
Staff by January 21st.

Our Training Program

SCA’s “Total Soccer Education Program” concentrates on developing player’s T.I.P.S.

  • Technique – Mastery of the Ball.
  • Insight – Learning the game.
  • Personality – Developing a competitive personality.
  • Speed – Physical Components necessary to compete in soccer.

Using our curriculum SCA staff trains the player’s T.I.P.S. according to their age level.

Our Schedule

While concentrating on individual player development we carefully design our team program to insure teams are exposed to the proper level of competition spread throughout the season - with breaks at appropriate times.  Believing the best players spend the most time with the ball our yearly schedule has been developed to spread out travel events, minimize the amount of time and money spent on travel, yet still expose our teams and players to the appropriate competitions necessary in the development of each age group. We strive to have all our teams play at the appropriate level of competition. For many of our teams this means the top tournaments and cups in Northern California (Older teams- Southern California) as well as the US Club Soccer Regionals. Our U16-U18 teams are committed to attending the top Western Region College Showcases.

Training Camps and Street Soccer

In addition to regular team trainings we utilize Training Camps and Street Soccer, which are planned into the schedule to insure players spend more time with the ball under the watchful eyes of our quality staff. Our Team Training Days insure all teams are trained in our club philosophy, with appropriate up to date training methods. They allow us to have additional hours training the teams to ensure proper development. Street Soccer is a program through the summer and fall. These days are scheduled for players to show up and simply play 4v4 up to 7v7 games with SCA supervision. All of these events help develop our players, teams and contribute to the overall club atmosphere we are striving for SCA.

Hoek Experience

SCA is very excited to offer its players a program with international experience. During the past three years the club has presented its players the Frans Hoek Experience. Frans is considered one of the top soccer clinicians and soccer educators in the WORLD. His method and philosophy was developed from his years at AJAX of Amsterdam and the Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona. Both these clubs are known around the world for their youth player development systems. All the SCA teams work 5 days with Frans and his staff as they help develop our players, teams, coaches, directors and board. This camp takes place each June at Sonoma State University and is exclusive to SCA. This experience can also include opportunities for all members to travel Europe for short or long periods. Frans introduced the popular skills coach from PSV Eindhoven Pepijn Lijnders 3 years ago.

College Assistance Program

SCA has a college assistance program (C.A.P.) that assists players in the college recruiting process. This program offers handouts, lectures, a college coach panel, website recruiting profiles, team meetings and individual assistance. The staff is full of former student-athletes and current and former college coaches. The program also assists players who wish to attend college and may decide not play soccer. We feel the most important thing is the player moves on to a higher level of education after high school.

Club Training

At least once a week all the SCA teams will report to one training facility.  We use Sonoma State University, Casa Grande HS and Luchessi Field for our Club Training days. Utilizing one facility, on these club training days, brings all the teams, players, coaches and technical staff together creating a fun and educational, club atmosphere. These days will be used to help develop our teams by emphasizing team tactics or individual technique under the guidance of our head technical staff. This format allows us to move players from team to team, positional training, inter-club scrimmages, top younger players training with older teams, speed and strength training, and classroom sessions. All of this is done within the common club system and formations. Finally, these trainings allow our players and teams the opportunity to be exposed to the entire staff.

NEW PLAYER DEVELOP ACADEMY (PDA) FOR U8, U9 and U10 PLAYERS

In 2008-2009 season all players wishing to play competitive soccer above the recreation level will play under the SCA Player Development Academy. So, in essence the Petaluma Untied and SCA U10 programs are merging. Our Academy (U8-U10) creates a fun and exciting environment that motivates players to develop their soccer technique (skills) and their passion for the game. Our Academy goal is to allow the players to learn and have fun while doing so. Our PDA program focuses on player development with an emphasis on 1v1 skills.

The PDA will train in age level training pools instead of set teams.  Teams will be formed for events that the Academy players are attending. The Academy players will attend all the same events as previous years with some events being optional.

Although we desire and strive for successful results when teams are formed , they will not come at the expense of player development. We believe an “Academy style” with focus on 1v1 and an internal 4v4 league is the best way for our U8-U10 players to become successful soccer players. This format creates unbelievable energy and an exciting learning environment where players can thrive!

Goalkeeper Program

Matt Bernard our Director of Goalkeeping in one of the finest goalkeeper coaches in Northern California. Matt has been the Goalkeeper coach for SCA and San Juan for the past 4 years. While with San Juan SC he worked as the Goalkeeper coach for American River JC in Sacramento. The past year he has been the Goalkeeper Coach for Sonoma State University where he was an All-American Goalkeeper and the starting GK for the 2oo2 National Championship team.  Also, last season Matt was invited by US Club Soccer to train the ID2 players at Regional Camp. The past 6  years Matt has been able to work with Frans Hoek the greatest goalkeeper coach in the world at the SSU Hoek Live-in camp. SCA is proud to have the best goalkeeping program in this area.
