This year SCA decided to ask 6-10 players to commit early to playing SCA and to not return to the tryouts in the U11-U14 age groups. At tryouts our main objective is to place the players trying out into the appropriate team and/or level. Part of our decision to do this is based on previous tryout experiences. For many years we would just take this same group of 6-10 players and have them sit out (sometimes in the rain) for most the tryout or play 5v5 with little or no attention. Since we again want to place kids at the appropriate level we felt it would be better to see kids in a bigger space and therefore not having as many players at the tryout is helpful. What a player can do in a 20 yard x 20 yard space is not always indicative of what they can do on half of a soccer field. It is also very common for an evaluator to get his/her attention drawn to the top players and therefore less eyes and time go into the final 6-10 spots. This is extremely problematic for Petaluma United who is trying to form their two teams as well during this same tryout process. Our cooperation with Petaluma United is very unique and special, but also causes larger numbers at tryouts than normal. We apologize if the process was not clear or caused any additional anxiety during this time or the year. Are intentions were not to adversely affect any player, but to truly place the kids in the appropriate level. In every age group there are close to 6-10 spots open for the SCA first team. We hope that players are motivated to come to the next two tryouts and show their best in order to make the team. We do realize that this model is also not perfect and are open to suggestions. Changes we feel need to be implemented for 2008 are:
