SCA 96 Girls Take 1st Place at the Sonoma County Classic
Wednesday, 06 September 2006
ImageThe SCA 96 girl’s team took home its second championship in tournament play for this season-- this time at the Sonoma County Classic. The team, coached by Matt Bernard, earned the title with over teams from Sacramento, El Dorado, and Burlingame.

SCA opened the tournament with back-to-back victories on the first day of play. The first win, a 5-1 victory over the El Dorado Storm, delivered an action packed first half. The scoring frenzy began with a perfectly delivered corner kick from Tatjiana Ziemer, to connect with Brooke Santander to find the back of the net. This was followed by a well-fed ball by Kaylee Castro, to connect with Kayla Kimball for goal number two. Annabelle Musil, assisted by a pass from Mallory Anderson and a cross from Santander, finished off the half with two stellar goals. All the while, defensive standouts Ziemer, Emily Welter, Emily Panacci, Rebecca Benjamin, and Arianna Martinez, provided rock solid support to goalie Madalyn Thomas, to hold the Storm to only one goal. In the second half of play, midfielders Bella Santia and Jackie Burgraf delivered strong play, keeping the ball on our side of the field much of the half. Madalyn Thomas, assisted by Kaylee Castro, scored the final goal for the SCA victory, while goalie, Kimball, and defensive star, Welter, held the second half to a shutout.

The second victory, (3-1) over Sacramento Nike Rush, delivered much of the same action. Stellar team-play, aggressive attacking offense, rock solid defense, accurate passing, and “fly to the ball” mentality had the SCA girls winning most balls, and ultimately clinching their second victory for the day--securing their place in the championship game.

Day two of the tournament began with a disappointing tie with the Burlingame Blitz (2-2), but ended with a championship victory over the Nike Rush. The championship game proved to be a hard fought win (3-1) for the SCA girls. SCA offense opened up the scoring with an offensive push from Maddie Verhunce, leading to a perfect pass from Kimball to Santander, who fielded the ball in traffic and managed a well-placed shot for the goal. In another offensive flurry, Burgraf accompanied by an offensive push from Sophia Payne, took a rocket shot on goal, fielded the goalies deflection, and fired a second shot to reach the net. The final goal came in the second half when Santander crossed to Castro who fired the ball past the goalie. Rush was shut-out the second half of play to secure the win, with solid play from goalie, Thomas, and the tough defensive play from Welter, Benjamin, Martinez, Hulsman, Ziemer, and Panacci.
