It could not have been a more exciting weekend of soccer! On August 12th and 13th the 94 Girls White, coached by Chris Daly, took 3rd place at the Suntan classic… but that’s not the whole story! The girls tied their first two games against El Dorado Eclipse and DeAnza Force (0-0, 1-1) on Saturday and ended the day tied for 2nd place. Sunday is when the real fun started. They won their 3rd game against CA Rush Swoosh (3-1) and found themselves tied for 1st place, even after accounting for tiebreakers. Tournament rules dictated a coin toss to break the tie and a coin toss they did. Unfortunately the girls lost…some of the players have vowed to never pick tails again! So it was on to the consolation round to compete against the Lodi Crushers, the most exciting game yet. At the end of regulation time, this game also was tied and went to penalty kicks. Emily Mugurussa as Goalie made two diving saves to give SCA a chance to win with one kick left in the 5th round. Lisa Surber stepped up and confidently scored to finish the game with a win (5-4). When it was finally over, Chris Daley commented, “between the coin flip and the penalty kicks I think this tournament has taken years off my life!” For the weekend, Monica Lopez collected 4 impressive goals and a penalty kick. Ryley Johnson also scored, putting a well-placed shot into the corner of the net. Shannon Carroll and Rika Goto both scored with killer penalty kicks. Jessica Maynard, Arielle Kubes, Rebecca Welter and Kelly O’Connor played very aggressive and effective defense, keeping the ball on the offensive half during most of play. Kylie Friedlander, Cara Sloth and Karissa Delzell worked tirelessly to control the middle and press the attack. Great play, great games and great result – congratulations coach and players! |
